The City of New Roads announces its COVID-19 Christmas Decorating Challenge. Whether you’re going for the Griswold Family Christmas look or a traditional feel, all residents inside the city limits of New Roads are encouraged to show off their community pride and spread cheer throughout the holiday season.
The restrictions due to COVID-19 and moving a step back to Phase 2 has forced the cancellation of New Roads Christmas parade previously scheduled for Saturday, December 5. “The holiday season remain a tough adjustment as COVID-19 predicts how traditional holiday celebrations are experienced,” stated Mayor Dukes. “We want everyone to know Christmas in New Roads has not been cancelled-just altered.”
The competition will feature three categories. The three categories and prizes are as follows: Best Theme-$500, including an old-fashioned, traditional and nostalgic display; People’s Choice-$300, the most popular home will be selected through tally via social media and the city’s website; Best Holiday Spirit-$250, including a religious holiday display; and The Griswold-$100, including excessive use of outdoor lighting and decoration. One winner will be announced from each group.No registration is required and participation is FREE. Residences need to be completely decorated by Sunday, December 20, 2020.
A panel of judges will be traveling through neighborhoods December 21-23, 2020 to select three winners. Participants must keep the holiday display lit from dusk until at least 9 p.m. each night beginning Monday, December 21 through the duration of the contest, ending Wednesday, December 23, 2020. Contest displays must be visible from curbside. Decorations will be judged on originality, lighting, and overall appeal in each category. Photos and videos of winners and selected homes will be posted to the city’s website and social media pages. Winners will be announced on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, 2020.
